German battleship BISMARCK and heavy cruiser PRINZ EUGEN by Joseph Reindler

" "AM I LEAKING FUEL?" – NORTH ATLANTIC, 1000HRS, EMPIRE DAY, MAY 24TH 1941"

Oil on linen, 24 x 40 inches (1000 x 600mm) - Limited Edition Print available

The German warships PRINZ EUGEN (nearest) and BISMARCK after the Battle of Denmark Strait; BISMARCK is flashing the signal "AM I LEAKING FUEL?" to her consort as engineers assess damage sustained during the action.  With an enemy squadron in pursuit, communication was restricted to radio-silence and visual signals only.  PRINZ EUGEN broke formation and, taking position in tow of BISMARCK, her lookouts sighted fuel oil trailing in the damaged battleship's wake.  Shortly afterward the ships parted company for the last time; sailors exchanging farewells as BISMARCK turned back toward the pursuing British squadron.  PRINZ EUGEN's sailors described keenly felt melancholy seeing BISMARCK disappear into drifting squalls - the fog bank illuminating pink as salvos thundered out during a second exchange with the battleship PRINCE OF WALES; eventual loneliness, and anxiety as to what fate the flagship had gone.  The large wave crest between the ships alludes to their contrasting fortunes.
